Shade Structure
Pergola of Auxetic Structure, placed in a courtyard of a university campus in Japan, is a small but groundbreaking project that demonstrates a new way to create porous, free-form surfaces. This is an application of a geometric structure called auxetic, which utilizes the plasticity of metal plates to create desired curved surfaces with a minimum of materials and labor. The pattern of incisions in metal plates, like Japanese paper cutouts kirigami, corresponds with the undulations of the surface. When it catches the light, it shines like a water surface, and the shadows that spill over are reminiscent of sunlight filtering through the trees.
