Rikuzentakata City Museum
Earthquake disaster recovery exhibit facility
The Great East Japan Earthquake completely destroyed this facility and devastated its resources. With the help of more than 70 museums from around Japan, approximately 460,000 of the damaged resources were rescued and restored as part of an internationally unprecedented recovery project: a tsunami-damaged living museum. These hometown treasures imbued with a significance to communicate to the world in the wake of this disaster have been made into a new, life-reaffirming living exhibit which stirs people’s hearts and establishes the broadly meaningful nature and significance of sustainable value while asking questions for the future.
