Hug was created with comfort and softness in mind, from the packaging to the chair itself. More than just a chair, it is a furniture kit that relieves anxiety by providing users with a means of crafting. As studies have shown, crafting for as little as 45 minutes can lower stress hormone levels by 75%. Hug’s objective was to investigate the emotional relationships that humans have with physical products, and to activate them to address anxiety.
The width and dimensions of the chair were determined ba-sed on sitting positions and angles that provide optimal physical and emotional comfort. Its elegant yet approachable frame is available in two materials: black walnut wood with smooth characteristic indentations, and powder coated me-tal with fabric-covered screw caps for added softness. The frame is accompanied by three different upholstery variations that allow the user to craft whenever they want: cylindrical cushions that slot onto the chair, a larger padded blanket to be tucked between the dowels, and a series of long, noodle-like cushions that can be freely weaved around the seat pan of the chair. The upholstery can be changed over time to match interior changes, or to soothe anxiety again and again.
Hug is designed to take the worry out of the user experience. The kit includes all of the tools and materials required to build the chair as well as complete the upholstery, so that the user does not have to worry about not having all of the necessary supplies. Hug also includes easy-to-follow, visual step-by-step instructions to make the assembly and crafting process even easier. The user assembles the chair’s ba-se frame using the included components before upholstering each cushion individually using their preferred crafting method (punch needling, knitting, crocheting, etc.). As an emotional connection to the product grows and the chair is associated with feelings of calmness and comfort, it becomes more effective in reducing anxiety.
