NEMO is designed as a four-stage service system to help municipalities and coral restoration agencies accelerate the current processes of coral restoration. Due to global warming, it is estimated that 90% of coral reefs will vanish by 2050. Rebuilding a healthy coral reef ecosystems is one of the most crucial parts of environmental recovery. However, coral restoration teams often lack the right equipment and resources to do this efficiently on a large scale. This might lead to more challenges during outplanting and harvesting. If not carried out quickly, it might even lower the survival rate of young corals.
NEMO restores large areas of coral reefs more efficiently and sustainably. It comprises a digital platform which helps scientists study and monitor coral reefs accurately, and a specialised transport box that supports the relocation of corals from the nursery site to the outplant site. The box regulates the temperature of the salt water and pH value in order to give young corals the best chance for survival during their journey. In addition, a collaborative drone serves two purposes: to monitor the 3D scanning and mapping of coral reefs and feed this data to a global coral reef databa-se; and to allow for efficient outplanting by carrying up to 100 corals to the outplant site. This means that the process will now only require 2 to 3 people (instead of 8-15).
