Music streaming services like Spotify, YouTube Music, and Apple Music have become the universal standard for music listeners, but playing a physical vinyl still provides an unrivalled tactile experience. The CD format, on the other hand, can be viewed as a middle ground between vinyl and streaming services because, unlike streaming platforms, a CD is digitised but still physically handled like a vinyl.
Vivia applies the analogue features of the vinyl turntable to CDs to bring the listener closer to the music. It retains all the features that replicate the charms of playing a vinyl record: taking out the record, placing it on the turntable, setting the tone arm, seeing the record spin, and reading the data engraved directly on the record. Although listening to a vinyl record is a charming experience, Vivia recognises that CDs continue to outperform vinyl in the following areas: single-sided data, which eliminates the hassle of having to flip the record; a lower price range than vinyl; and a lower risk of breakage when compared to vinyl.
Vivia’s retro and minimal aesthetic visually connects the listener’s inner world to their personal albums. The tone arm automatically calculates the overall running time of the CD and moves slowly, like a turntable, from the outside to the centre of the CD, matching the length of the album. Listeners can change the playback time of the music by directly moving the tone arm. Listeners can also change the tracks on the CD by pressing the “Track Selector” left and right, just like DJs do on a turntable. When a track is changed, the tone arm automatically moves to the new position.
